Edmund Mendelssohn received a PhD in Musicology from UC Berkeley in 2021 and has been teaching music since 2005. He offers individual and group music lessons in your home, at your convenience, for students of all ages and levels of experience in the greater Sacramento area, Davis, and the Bay Area.
Edmund is currently a Lecturer in UC Berkeley’s music department where he teaches a wide range of courses including Introduction to Western Music, music theory, and basic musicianship, and he has designed reading & composition-focused courses such as “Music and Kitsch” and “Music and Language.” As a scholar, Edmund’s research focuses on European and American music from 1800 to the present and French poststructuralist philosophy.
His first book, White Musical Mythologies: Sonic Presence in Modernism, has been published by Stanford University Press.
Originally a jazz performer, Edmund studied at Berklee College of Music and completed a Bachelor of Music in New York (SUNY Purchase, 2012) before moving to the Sacramento area. Currently residing in Rocklin, CA, he travels regularly to meet with students and also works in the solar industry.
